I’m in the break room at work. Two pumps of soap fall into my hand before I use my forearm to lift the faucet handle, a routine that I adopted in the worsening global pandemic. Living with chronically ashy hands — gray, cracked, and ugly — has broken my sense of control. I need to understand why.
